Football Announces Hiring of Jim Turner as
Offensive Line Coach

-- Jim Turner (right), who spent the last
two seasons as an assistant coach at
Temple University, has been hired as the
new offensive line coach for the
University of Delaware football team, head
coach K.C. Keeler announced
Wednesday.
Turner.
40, replaces Kyle Flood, who served the
last three seasons as offensive line coach
for the Blue Hens before taking the same
position at Rutgers University in
February.
"We are
very fortunate to be able to attract a
coach as qualified as Jim Turner," said
Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler. "He has
had tremendous success throughout his
career and we feel he can make a great
impact on what will be a young offensive
line for us."
A native
of Braintree, MA, Turner has served on the
college staffs of Northeastern, Louisiana
Tech, Harvard, and Temple before arriving
at Delaware. He was a standout player at
Boston College before joining the coaching
ranks.
After a
standout career at Braintree (MA) High
School, Turner moved on to an outstanding
playing career at Boston College where he
earned his degree n sociology in 1988.
While a player at Boston College, he
lettered three seasons and competed in the
Liberty Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Hall of
Fame Bowl. After serving as a backup
fullback and special teams player his
first two seasons, he moved into a
starting spot at fullback his final two
years and served as team captain as a
senior in 1987. He earned a tryout with
the New York Giants but was released prior
to the season in 1988 and later played
semi-pro football with the Kent Rams in
London, England.
He began
his coaching career at Braintree High
School in 1988 and served as offensive
coordinator for the Kent Rams in England
in 1989. Following his coaching/playing
stint in England, he joined the United
States Marine Corps as an infantry officer
and served from 1990 until 1994. While in
the Marines, he served as a platoon
commander, an operations officer, and
executive officer and served in Europe,
the Middle East, and in Japan.
He
returned to Boston and to the coaching
ranks in 1994 and served five years under
head coach Barry Gallup at Delaware rival
Northeastern University, working with the
Huskies offensive line, tight ends,
running backs, defensive line, and special
teams. The Huskies went 8-3 during the
1997 season.
Turner
moved up to the NCAA I-A level in 1999 and
coached the offensive line and was a
special teams assistant at Louisiana Tech
in Ruston, LA. While at Louisiana Tech,
his offensive line allowed just 18 sacks
and the team ranked No. 1 in the
conference in passing offense (402.0) and
No. 2 in total offense (474.0). The team
went 8-3 under head coach Jack Bicknell.
He spent
the next three seasons as offensive line
coach and run game coordinator at Harvard
under head coach Tim Murphy, helping the
Crimson post an undefeated 9-0 season and
the Ivy League title in 2001. The 2000
team broke 17 school offensive records and
Harvard was ranked No. 1 in the league in
rushing. In 2001, Harvard once again led
the Ivy League in rushing and ranked
second in sacks allowed. The 2002 squad
went 7-3, led the Ivy League in sacks
allowed and was second in rushing offense.
Following
his tenure at Harvard, he spent two
seasons as offensive line coach at Temple
University under head coach Bobby Wallace.
Turner and
his wife, Patricia, will reside in the
Newark area.
