Secondary Coach
Date:
February15, 2005
NEWARK, DE
-- University of Delaware football head
coach K.C. Keeler announced Tuesday that
former Holy Cross associate head coach
Isaac Collins (right) has been hired as
defensive secondary coach.
Collins,
who coached the last five seasons at
Patriot League members Holy Cross and
Lehigh, replaces Paul Williams, who
accepted a position as defensive secondary
coach at Western Michigan University in
January. Williams had served the previous
six seasons on the Blue Hen staff.
"We are
very excited to have found someone with
the type of experience that Isaac
possesses," said Keeler, who led the Blue
Hens to a 9-4 record, the team's second
Atlantic 10 Conference title, and a berth
in the NCAA I-AA quarterfinals this past
fall. "He has coached the defensive
secondary for seven years and has also
served as a coordinator and as an
associate head coach. He came very highly
recommended and we think he can add to a
staff that I feel is one of the best in
the country."
Despite
the loss of safety Garron Bible and
All-American cornerback Sidney Haugabrook,
the Blue Hens return four players with
starting experience in the secondary in
senior cornerback Roger Brown, junior
cornerback Rashaad Woodard, third-year
starting safety Kyle Campbell, and junior
safety Nicos Chavis as well as veterans
John Russ, Zach Thomas, and Jeff Robinson.
The unit also returns promising redshirt
freshmen Fred Andrew, Emanuel Beneby,
Jahiri Gunthorpe, Rafiq Gunthorpe, and
Mario McLean.
A 1994
graduate of the University of Rochester
(NY) with a degree in political science,
Collins has spent his entire coaching
career on the East Coast, serving as an
assistant at NCAA Division III Hobart
College, Ivy League member Columbia, and
Patriot League squads Lehigh and Holy
Cross. During his coaching tenure he has
directly coached 10 all-conference
selections.
In
addition to his coaching tenure at the
collegiate level, Collins served a summer
National Football League Minority
Fellowship with the New York Giants in
1999 and with the Philadelphia Eagles in
2001.
While a
student at Rochester, Collins was a
four-year letterman, serving as team
captain as a senior in 1993 and earning
conference Offensive Player of the Year
honors in 1992. He is the second leading
rusher in school history and was an
all-conference selection in 1992 and
1993.
He began
his coaching career at Hobart College in
Geneva, NY in 1994 and served for five
seasons until 1997. While at Hobart,
Collins served as running backs coach,
junior varsity head coach, and defensive
backs coach. He also served as Hobart's
defensive coordinator, recruiting
coordinator, and chairman of retention
committee, and was assistant director of
the Hobart Summer Football
Camp.
Collins
then moved up to the NCAA I-AA level in
1998, taking over as running backs coach
at Columbia University in New York, NY for
the 1998 and 1999 seasons while also
serving a stint as wide receivers coach.
He took
over the defensive secondary coaching
position at Lehigh University in
Bethlehem, PA in 2000 and served for four
seasons with the Mountain Hawks and head
coach Pete Lembo. In addition to his
coaching duties, he served as recruiting
coordinator and video coordinator and
assisted with fund-raising. During his
tenure, Lehigh went 39-9, won Patriot
League titles in 2000 and 2001, and
advanced to the I-AA playoffs in 2000 and
2001. The team went 12-1 in 2000 and 11-1
in 2001.
Collins
took over as associate head football
coach, defensive coordinator, and
defensive secondary coach at Holy Cross in
January, 2004 and served one season under
first-year head coach Tom Gilmore until
accepting the Delaware position. The
Crusaders went 3-8 overall and 1-5 in
Patriot League play this past fall.
Collins
and his wife, Ada, have a daughter Kayla,
and son, Jaylen.
