Delaware
Names Jerry Oravitz First Full-Time
Director of Football
Operations
Date:
January 10, 2005
NEWARK, DE
-- Jerry Oravitz, who has served as the
University of Delaware athletics program's
operations associate the last eight years,
has been named the Blue Hens' first-ever
director of football operations, Director
of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson announced
Monday.
Oravitz,
whose former responsibilities included
coordinating gameday and practice needs,
scheduling of facilities, and game
management for all of Delaware's 23
intercollegiate sports, including
football, will now work full-time with the
UD football program and head coach K.C.
Keeler' staff.
"The
responsibilities of running a collegiate
football program outside of the on-field
coaching aspect become greater each year,"
said Johnson in announcing the new
position. "Jerry has a wealth of talent
and knowledge and has done an outstanding
job handling the day to day operations of
the football program in the past and this
position adds greater responsibilities in
extremely important areas such as budgets,
coordinating events, and recruiting. The
formation of this position allows Coach
Keeler and his staff to devote more time
to day to day coaching and recruiting
efforts and will help us continue to be
one of the top NCAA I-AA football programs
in the country."
Oravitz
will continue to organize team travel,
serve as game manager for home football
games, and coordinate practice and game
field needs but will have added
responsibilities with Keeler's staff in
terms of managing the football budget,
assisting in football fund-raising events,
planning recruiting weekends on campus and
off-campus recruiting trips, working with
the equipment room, coordinating summer
coaching clinics and skill camps, and
assisting with community public relations
events and activities.
Oravitz,
41, earned his degree in physical
education, recreation and leisure studies
management from Salisbury University in
1984, received his master's degree in
human services administration from
Springfield (MA) College in 1998, and
completed program requirements with the
Sports Management Institute Executive
Program sponsored by the University of
Notre Dame and the University of Texas.
While at
Delaware, Oravitz has served as Tournament
Director for the America East Baseball,
Indoor Track & Field, and Men's and
Women's Lacrosse championships hosted by
the University of Delaware. He also served
as Tournament Director for the 2003 and
2004 NCAA I-AA Football post-season
committees and served on previous football
post-season committees. He also serves as
an instructor in the UD Health Behavior
Management: Sports Management Curriculum
which began in September, 2002.
A former
first team All-State baseball player and
All-Catholic League basketball player at
St. Elizabeth's High School in Wilmington,
DE, Oravitz was a four-year varsity
starter in baseball at Virginia Wesleyan
and Salisbury University. He served as
team co-captain at Virginia Wesleyan in
1983.
He worked
with the City of Wilmington Department of
Parks and Recreation as a superintendent
and program director from 1987 until 1993.
In 1991 he was promoted to superintendent
of the William "Hicks" Anderson Community
Center. Most recently, Oravitz served as
unit director of the Boy's and Girl's Club
of Greater Newark in 1993-97. He remains
active with the Boy's and Girls Clubs of
Greater Newark, Special Olympics of
Delaware, and the Delaware High School
Football Blue-Gold game.
Oravitz
and his wife, Teresa, a 1979 graduate of
Elizabethtown (PA) College, reside in
Bear, DE.
