RICHMOND, VA -- University of Richmond quarterback Stacy Tutt threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Spiders to a 20-10 victory over No. 22 Delaware in Atlantic 10 Conference football action Saturday afternoon at UR Stadium.

Tutt was 16-for-25 for 212 yards and also ran 17 times for a team-high 73 yards for Richmond, which improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the league. The Blue Hens fell to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference, as Delaware dropped its first three league games for the first time since the 1987 season when UD competed in the Yankee Conference. Delaware has now lost three consecutive games for the first time since the final game of 2000 and the first two games of 2001, and for the first time in the same year since 1989.

Richmond, which had lost five of the last six meetings with the Blue Hens, struck first with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter when Joseph Fore kicked a 21-yard field goal to cap a 15-play, 79-yard drive.

The Spiders then recovered an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff, and started its drive on the Blue Hen 30 yardline. On third and 14 Tutt found Josh Vaughan for a 20-yard completion, and three plays later Tutt connected with Matt Hale on an eight-yard touchdown pass to give Richmond a 10-0 lead with 14:56 remaining in the second quarter.

The Blue Hens responded on their next possession, driving 67 yards on 13 plays before freshman Zach Hobby nailed a 22-yard field goal to bring Delaware within 10-3 with 8:50 remaining in the half. After a punt by each team, Richmond drove 79 yards on eight plays and scored on a three-yard run by Tutt with 27 seconds on the clock as the Spiders took a 17-3 advantage into halftime.

Richmond had chances to break the game open in the third quarter, but Fore missed a 27-yard field goal early in the period and a fumble by Tutt on the Delaware one yardline was recovered by the Blue Hens’ Jahiri Gunthorpe. However Delaware could not capitalize on the turnover, and on Richmond’s ensuing possession Fore drilled a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter to cap an eight-play, 30-yard drive and give the Spiders a 20-3 lead.

The Blue Hens drove to the Richmond 17 yardline on their next possession, but Zach Hobby’s 35-yard field goal was wide left, Hobby’s first miss in five attempts this season. Delaware capped the scoring with 5:25 to play when senior quarterback Sonny Riccio scored on a six-yard run to cap a 10-play, 86-yard drive and snap the Blue Hens’ streak of 115:52 without a touchdown.

Riccio finished 21-for-38 for 234 yards and also ran for 47 yards and the score. Kervin Michaud had a team-high six receptions for 45 yards for Delaware, while Omar Cuff ran for 59 yards and also caught four passes for 50 yards. Armand Cauthen and Brian Ingram (above) each had three receptions, while Joe Bleymaier had two to extend his streak of 17 straight games with a reception.

KeiAndre Hepburn made a team-high 12 tackles for the Blue Hen defense, while Gunthorpe and John Mulhern each had 10 stops.

Arman Shields caught nine passes for 106 yards for the Spiders, who were 10-for-17 on third down conversions. Richmond held a 35:08 to 24:52 advantage in time of possession during the game, which was played in Richmond due to unplayable field conditions at Delaware Stadium.

“We had a great opportunity to right our season today,” fourth-year Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler said. “The kids have been great about the game change all week, but we just couldn’t take advantage of this opportunity and that is what is so disappointing. We are getting such a tremendous effort in practice and on the field, but we are so inconsistent and are giving up so many big plays, it’s tremendously frustrating.”

Delaware will look to snap its three-game losing streak next Saturday when the Blue Hens host No. 4 and defending national champion James Madison at 12 noon.
