CHICAGO -- University of Delaware senior center Kheon Hendricks (top right) and junior safety Charles Graves (bottom right) have been named to the College Sporting News Fabulous Fifty NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision All-American team.
Hendricks, a two-time The Sports Network honorable mention All-American team, was an honorable mention All-American pick by CSN. He was one of 17 offensive linemen named to the team. Graves was named to the Associated Press second team All-American squad in December. The selections were made by CSN staff members.
Hendricks, a 6-1, 300 lbs. graduate student from Pikesville, Md. (Woodlawn High School), earned All-American honors for the second straight year after being named to the TSN honorable mention team in 2007 when he led the Blue Hens to the NCAA Division Football Championship Subdivision national title game.
A co-captain during the 2008 season, Hendricks anchored the Blue Hen offensive line once again this fall. The Hens struggled to a 4-8 record but allowed just 1.67 sacks per game to rank sixth in the CAA. During the 2007, he led an offense that led the CAA in passing offense, scoring offense, and total offense behind a pair of All-Americans in quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Omar Cuff. Flacco is now the starting quarterback for the National Football League’s Baltimore Ravens.
Hendricks, only the third center in UD history to earn All-American honors, becomes only the second Blue Hen offensive lineman to earn All-American laurels two years in a row. Offensive tackle Garry Kuhlmann earned first team team All-American honors from the American Football Coaches Association in both 1980 and 1981.
A first team All-CAA selection earlier this season, Graves spearheaded a Delaware defense that ranked fourth in the CAA by allowing just 20.7 points per game. A second-year starter, he led the Blue Hens with 78 tackles, including a team-leading 43 solo stops, while also posting two quarterback sacks, a team-high five interceptions, five pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries.
A three-time Blue Hen Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Week award winner, returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown vs. Richmond, a game in which he also intercepted a pass. He recorded nine or more tackles four times, including a career-high 14 stops in the season finale vs. Villanova.
Richmond’s Mike London was selected as Coach of the Year, Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards was named Offensive Player of the Year, Eastern Washington defensive end Greg Peach was the Defensive Player of the Year, Richmond guard Matt McCracken was the Offensive Lineman of the Year, Stony Brook running back Edwin Gowins was named Freshman of the Year, and Richmond defensive end Lawrence Sidbury Jr. was picked as Playoff Most Valuable Player.
Among the other CAA athletes named to the team were first team picks in quarterback Rodney Landers of James Madison, offensive lineman Scott Lemn of James Madison, tight end Scott Sicko of New Hampshire, defensive end Greg Miller of Villanova, defensive end Jovan Belcher of Maine, defensive lineman Sherman Logan of Richmond, linebacker Eric McBride of Richmond, and defensive back Courtney Robinson of Massachusetts.
Honorable mention picks were Hendricks, Graves, running back Josh Vaughan of Richmond, fullback Jared Turcotte of Maine, tight end Brian Mandeville of Northeastern, wide receiver Mike Boyle of New Hampshire, defensive linemen Sam Daniels of James Madison and Adrian Tracy of William & Mary, linebackers Matt Parent of New Hampshire, Osayi Osunde of Villanova, defensive backs Dino Vasso and John Clements of New Hampshire and Justin Roders from Richmond, and punter Brett Arnold of Massachusetts.
