University of Delaware Seniors Honored at Annual Blue Hen Touchdown Club Football Banquet; Love, Johnson Earn Top Honors

NEWARK, Del. -- The 20 seniors on the 2008 University of Delaware football team were honored Friday night at the annual Blue Hen Touchdown Club Awards Banquet at Clayton Hall on campus.

Wide receiver Aaron Love (bottom right; Southfield HS/Detroit, Mich.) was named Outstanding Senior Offensive Player, linebacker Erik Johnson (top right; Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) was named Outstanding Senior Defensive Player and earned the Newark Elks Club Scholar-Athlete Award, tight end Robbie Agnone (Red Land/Etters, Pa.) won the Winnie Mayer Outstanding Senior End Award, and center Kheon Hendricks (Woodlawn/Pikesville, Md.) received the Outstanding Senior Lineman Award.

Also, punter Stuart Kenworthy (St. Albans/Washington, D.C.) was the winner of the Unsung Hero Award, Hendricks, wide receiver/running back Kervin Michaud (Pennsburgy/Levittown, Pa.), and Johnson received the Captains’ Award, and Michaud received the Taylor Memorial Award for character, courage, and promoting team morale.

Love, a four-year starter at wide receiver for the Hens, capped his career by catching 38 passes for a team-high 462 yards (12.2 avg.) and two touchdowns this past fall while also rushing for 102 yards, completing 6 of 7 passes for 66 yards as a quarterback, and averaging 5.0 yards on 13 punt returns.

Athlete photoA 2007 All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, he became Delaware’s all-time career pass reception leader as he finished with 193 catches for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Johnson, a three-year starter at linebacker for the Hens and a 2007 co-captain, endured an injury-plagued season as a senior but still managed to play in 11 games with 10 starts and ranked fourth on the team with 62 tackles. He also had 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and one interception.

For his career, he posted 322 tackles to rank No. 9 all-time at Delaware and also posted 30 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, six pass breakups, and seven interceptions. A health and physical education major with a 3.2 grade point index, he was a four-time member of the conference academic honor roll.

Agnone, a three-year starter at tight end, caught 16 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns this past fall to earn third team All-CAA honors and also completed 9 of 17 passes for 86 yards while playing two games at quarterback. For his career, he caught 71 passes for 886 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2007.

Hendricks, a three-year starter who earned All-American honors in both 2007 and 2008, anchored the Blue Hen offensive line for the past three seasons. The unit allowed just 20 sacks during the 2008 season to rank among the CAA leaders. As a junior, he led an offensive front that paved the way for an offense that led the CAA and ranked among the NCAA leaders in scoring offense and total offense. He also earned second team All-CAA honors this fall.

Kenworthy was a four-year regular for the Blue Hens as a punter and appeared in 44 career games. This past season he punted 64 times for 2,447 yards and and 38.2 yard average. He had three punts of 50 or more yards and landed 17 inside the opponent 20-yard line.

For his career, he punted 194 times (No. 3 all-time at UD) for 7,213 yards (No. 2 at UD) and an average of 37.2 yards per kick (No. 8 at UD). He had 49 career punts land inside the opponent 20-yard line (No. 2 at UD) and ended his career with 167 straight punts without being blocked.

The versatile Michaud was a four-year standout who played wide receiver, running back, and kick returner during his career. A second team All-CAA selection as a junior in 2007, he missed five games at mid-season this fall due to a broken clavicle but made a dramatic comeback and played in the final three contests.

He was the team’s third leading receiver with 19 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown and was fourth on the squad in rushing with 168 yards on 42 carries. He also averaged 21.0 yards on four kickoff returns. He played in 42 career games and finished his career with 135 catches for 1,394 yards and six touchdowns and 122 carries for 552 yards and a touchdown. His 3,336 career all-purpose yards ranks No. 11 all-time at Delaware.

In addition to the award winners, the other seniors honored were cornerback Fred Andrew (Durant/Valrico, Fla.), linebacker Brian Brown (Sandy Creek/Fayetteville, Ga.), kicker/punter Matt Calio (Wilmington Charter/Newark, Del.), defensive back Leo Ferrine (St. Peter’s Prep/Springfield, N.J.), offensive guard Jon Herrman (Central Catholic/McKees Rocks, Pa.), defensive back Aaron Hicks (Gwynn Park/Accokeek, Md.), offensive tackle Chris Hyncik (Montgomery/Skillman, N.J.), running back Junior Jabbie (Hun School/Parlin, N.J.), defensive tackle Julian James (Berkeley/Berkeley, Calif.), running back Mick Purzycki (Tatnall/Wilmington, Del.), running back/tight end Matt Ruggiero (West Essex/North Caldwell, N.J.), long snapper/holder Ted Shea (Tatnall/Wilmington, Del.), running back Jonathon Smith (Trinity/Camp Hill, Pa.), and defensive end Ronald Talley (Renaissance/Detroit, Mich.).

This year’s senior class enjoyed outstanding success while at Delaware, combining for a record of 35-27 over the last five seasons, including a conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004 and an NCAA national runner-up finish in 2007.
