RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore cornerback Anthony Walters (at right), who played a big part in helping the Blue Hens post an impressive defensive effort in the season-opening 14-7 loss at Maryland Saturday, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the CAA announced Monday.

Walters, a 6-1, 195 lb. cornerback from Philadelphia, Pa. (Cardinal O’Hara High School), collected a career and team-high 13 tackles, including nine solo stops, and intercepted a pass deep in Blue Hen territory to lead the Delaware defensive effort.

The No. 9 ranked Blue Hens (0-1) allowed just two touchdowns, 397 total yards, and forced two turnovers in playing the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Terrapins close all day. Maryland (1-0), an Atlantic Coast Conference contender, has played in a post-season bowl game five times in the last seven seasons.

Walters started all 15 games a year ago as a redshirt freshman and collected 63 tackles and four interceptions in leading Delaware to an 11-4 record and a berth in the NCAA championship game. He was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week last season vs. Rhode Island in September.

Walters shared the weekly Defensive Player of the Week honors with Josh Jennings of Massachusetts. Also honored by the CAA were Offensive Player of the Week Eric Ward of Richmond, Rookie of the Week Louis Feinstein of Rhode Island, and Special Teams Player of the Week Scott McGee of James Madison.
