University of Delaware Football Players Trevor Mooney, Mark Mackey Named to CoSIDA Academic Team

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – University of Delaware junior wide receiver Mark Mackey and junior tight end Trevor Mooney have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic team.

The two scholar-athletes were among 25 players named to the team, which is comprised of NCAA Division I players at both the Football Championship Subdivision and Football Bowl Subdivision. Student-athletes must carry a 3.3 or better grade point index, be a starter or key reserve, and be a sophomore or older. District 2 includes all schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

Both Mackey (top right) and Mooney (bottom right) are now eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-American national team which will be announced later this month.

Mackey, an economics education major with a minor in mathematics from Harrisburg, Pa. (Central Dauphin High School), carries a 3.67 grade point index. A two-year letterwinner, he has started all nine games this season and ranks second on the team in receiving with 30 receptions for 322 yards (10.7 average) and one touchdowns. For his career, he has caught 43 passes for 467 yards and two touchdowns.

Athlete photoA Dean’s List student and member of the Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll, Mackey is also a nominee for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics national academic all-star team. He is a math tutor on campus and has been an active volunteer with Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Mooney, an economics major from Mission Viejo, Calif. (Trabuco Hills High School), carries a 3.76 grade point index, the sixth highest of the 25 student-athletes named to the team. He has played in all nine games this season and started four contests, taking over when starters Josh Baker and Colin Naugle went down with injuries. He has caught one pass for four yards this season, a touchdown vs. then No. 12 ranked Massachusetts. He also had one catch for seven yards last season.

Mackey and Mooney were among six CAA players named to the team, joining Villanova quarterback Chris Whitney, running back Angelo Babbaro, and linebacker Osayi Osunde and Towson defensive lineman Yaky Ibia.
