RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior placekicker Jon Striefsky, who booted a school-record four field goals in the Blue Hens’ hard-fought 35-18 setback to Navy Saturday, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Striefsky (at right), a senior from Lansdale, Pa. (North Penn High School), was one of four student-athletes honored by the CAA. University of Maine quarterback Chris Treister was named Offensive Player of the Week, William & May defensive end Adrian Tracy was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week, and Northeastern University linebacker Kyle Hunte was selected as the Rookie of the Week.
Striefsky earned the award for the second time in his career after also being honored as a Player of the Week against James Madison as a sophomore in 2007.
He was also the fourth Delaware players honored this season by the CAA as quarterback Pat Devlin was named Offensive Player of the Week vs. Maine and Massachusetts, running back David Hayes was named Rookie of the Week against Maine, and cornerback Marcus Burley was picked as Rookie of the Week vs. Massachusetts.
Already Delaware’s all-time leader in field goals, Striefsky enjoyed a record-breaking day as he booted four field goals to break the record of three field goals set 18 times earlier, including three times by him. Navy (8-3), which has already earned an invitation to the NCAA Division I FBS Texas Bowl, scored three touchdowns in the final quarter to pull away.
Striefsky was responsible for 12 of Delaware’s 18 points vs. Navy as he connected on field goal tries from 47, 29, and 25 yards in the first half to give the Hens a 9-7 halftime lead. His 47-yarder tied his career-high while the 25-yarder came on the last play of the half. He later split the uprights with a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter to pull the Hens to within 14-12. He has now connected on 11 of 12 field goals this season and his career total of 39 field goals is a UD career mark and just one shy of No. 10 on the all-time CAA list.
No. 25 ranked Delaware (6-4) will close out the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m. at No. 2 Villanova at Villanova (Pa.) Stadium. The Hens need a victory to keep their slim NCAA playoffs hopes alive. A win by Villanova will clinch the league title and automatic NCAA playoff berth for the Wildcats (9-1).
