Former Delaware Football Standout Jason Nerys to Earn ECAC Robbins Scholar-Athlete Award this Sunday

HYANNIS, MA -- Jason Nerys, an All-American offensive lineman who led the University of Delaware to the 2003 NCAA I-AA football national title and is currently a member of the New York Jets practice squad, will be honored this Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Fall Convention.

Nerys (pronounced "near-ease") will be one of six student-athletes honored with the ECAC Robbins Scholar-Athlete Award, presented each year to a male and female student-athlete at an ECAC member institution in each of the three NCAA divisions for outstanding accomplishments on the playing field and in the classroom. The honors dinner will be held at the Sheraton Hyannis Resort on Cape Cod.

A native of Waldwick, NJ (Don Bosco Prep), Nerys enjoyed an outstanding career on the football field and in the classroom at the University of Delaware and earned his degree in fitness management this past May. He signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets in May and is currently on the National Football League team's practice squad.

A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter as an offensive guard, Nerys served as a co-captain for the 2003 Blue Hen football team that posted a 15-1 record and captured the NCAA I-AA national title with a 40-0 win over Colgate. Delaware also was co-champion of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference and earned the Lambert Cup Trophy and ECAC Team of the Year Award as the top I-AA team in the East.

Nerys was as consensus first team All-American, earning a spot on The Sports Network, the Associated Press, College Sports Television (CSTV), and I-AA.Com All-American teams. He also was a first team All-East (ECAC) and first team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Also a second team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2002, he started the final 38 games of his career.

In the classroom, Nerys graduated with a 3.4 grade point index and earned a host of awards. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team three times during his career and was named to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of American District 2 All-Academic second team twice. In addition, he earned the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Scholar-Athlete Award in 2003 and was a nominee for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Post-Graduate Scholarship. He earned the Delaware football team's Newark Elks Club Scholar-Athlete Award as the senior with the highest grade point index. He also was active as a student volunteer with Special Olympics Delaware.

Other ECAC Robbins Award recipients are Meghan Ramsey of Lafayette, James Newman of Assumption, Kerri Stone of the College of St. Rose, Paul Whiting of Amherst College, and Amanda Laytham of Ithaca College. Also honored at the awards dinner will be Sue Crosby-Tangen of Bridgewater State (Katherine Ley Award), Dr. Michael Mould of College Misericordia and Susan Bassett of William Smith College (ECAC Jostens Administrators of the Year Award), Karen Olander of Springfield College and the late Dan Allen of Holy Cross (ECAC Alumni Award of Valor), and Rebecca Gutwin of William Smith College and Tom Cleaver of Middlebury College (ECAC Award of Valor).
