High School: Standout at Trinity High School (Camp Hill, Pa.) for head coach Jeff Boger where he also was a standout in basketball and track and field...earned second team All-State honors as a junior in football and was twice named to the All-Mid Penn Conference team...led basketball team to state AA championship in 2003 and was a state finalist in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the state track meet...set school records in the long jump and 4 x 400 meter relay...conference finalist in the 100 meters, 200 meters, high jump, and long jump...played senior season in 2003 at Maine Central Institute (Pittsfield, ME) where he was a finalist for conference Most Valuable Player honors and earned all-area honors on both offense and defense by the Kenebec Journal...volunteered at a local retirement home while at student at Trinity.

At Delaware: Second-year transfer from University of Connecticut...senior who will battle for significant playing time at running back with a host of veteran players as Delaware looks to replace All-American and No. 2 all-time leading rusher Omar Cuff....hard-hitter who will continue to be a key player for special teams unit...one of the team’s top athletes with an impressive combination of speed and strength...a top performer in the weight room...called by head coach K.C. Keeler as the best special teams player he has ever coached...could also see time at linebacker if needed...rushed for 10 yards on four carries in spring game.

2007 Season: Earned letter in first season at Delaware after transfer from Connecticut...versatile performer who started the year as a backup linebacker but moved into a reserve role at running back early in the campaign...led team to 11-4 record and a berth in the FCS national championship game under head coach K.C. Keeler...was team’s most accomplished coverage player on special teams...appeared in all 15 games in a reserve role...recorded 14 tackles, including nine stops, and carried 12 times for 68 yards (5.7 avg.) to rank No. 4 on team in rushing...collected a season-high two tackles each vs. Rhode Island, Towson, Monmouth, Richmond, Villanova, and Delaware State...ran seven times for a career-high 54 yards, including a career-long 35-yard run, vs. Monmouth in second half of victory...also ran for eight yards vs. West Chester and six yards vs. Rhode Island...transfered to Delaware and was enrolled in school during the spring...took part in spring drills and impressed coaching staff...defensive star of spring game as he recorded a game-high 13 tackles (five solo stops).

At Connecticut: Two-year contributor at Connecticut as an outside linebacker for head coach Randy Edsall...played in 23 games with four starts for the Huskies and recorded 74 career tackles.

2006 Season: Played in 12 games with two starts for team that posted a record of 4-8...recorded 25 tackles (eight solo) and one tackle for loss...recorded season-high 12 tackles in win over Atlantic 10 Conference foe Rhode Island...2005 Season: Played in 11 games at outside linebacker and started games vs. Army and Rutgers... team went 5-6...ranked fifth on team in tackles with 49 (23 solo) and also had a sack, a pass breakup, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles...recorded a career-high 15 tackles vs. Rutgers and added eight tackles, a sack, and recovered a fumble vs. Cincinnati...had nine wins and broke up a pass vs. Army.

Personal: Johnathon Juan Smith...born April 2, 1984...sociology major with a minor in strength and conditioning at Delaware...would like to enter commercial real estate field after graduation...has worked as a youth football coach in his hometown....active with Big Brothers and Big Sisters...enjoys collecting rare fish,, working out and riding dirt bikes in spare time...teaches American Sign Language...has a younger brother who attends Millersville (Pa.) University...took a road trip with his brother this summer, visiting every state from Delaware to Maine.
