NEWARK, DE
-- The University of Delaware took part
in its second and final scrimmage of the
pre-season Monday night under the lights
of Delaware Stadium.
The Blue
Hens, who open the regular season Sept. 2
at home against the University of New
Hampshire, scrimmaged for approximately 45
minutes and took part in just under 50
total plays before a crowd of 250
spectators.
Delaware
took part in approximately 25 plays from
scrimmage and also practiced kickoffs,
punt coverage, and field goals. The Blue
Hens will practice each of the next four
days before breaking camp on Saturday. The
team will begin preparations for the
season opener beginning Sunday.
"Tonight's
scrimmage was about a lot of things," said
Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler. "We
wanted to get a feel for what the time
frame of a game would be and what it's
going to be like when we play New
Hampshire. We did the pre-game meal and
got a chance to play under the lights. We
also wanted to see some intensity and I
was happy with some of the things I saw.
We played without a lot of guys tonight
but most of them are veterans who don't
need the reps. It gave us the chance to
get some younger guys who could really use
them. Last year we lost a couple of guys
and others emerged and it made our team
stronger. We'll push through it.
"
Monday's
scrimmage was played without 11 regulars
who sat out with various nagging injuries,
none considered serious. Among the missing
were running backs Sean Bleiler and Niquan
Lee, center Chris Edwards, wide receivers
Justin Long, David Boler, and Joe
Bleymaier, defensive linemen Tom Parks,
Lou Samba, and Ben Cross, and defensive
backs Sidney Haugabrook and Zach Thomas.
Among the
scrimmage highlights was 60-yard run by
redshirt freshman Lonnie Starks, a short
touchdown run by Anthony Cinelli, big
defensive hits from senior defensive
tackle Chris Mooney and freshman
cornerback Omar Cuff, and field goals of
32 yards and 45 yards by freshman kicker.
