Drew Nystrom, a former standout lineman at Bowling Green, begins his first season with the Univeristy of Delaware football coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach.
Nystrom, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill. (Prairie Ridge HS), earned his degree in biology with honors from Bowling Green in December, 2007 and served as a tight ends and offensive line assistant coach at Wabash College this past fall.
He will work with the Blue Hen offense, predominantly with coach Damian Wroblewski and the UD offensive linemen. He will also coordinate film breakdown and exchange and will assist with practice planning.
He earned four letters as an offensive tackle at NCAA Division I Bowling Green from 2003-07 and led the team to a five-year mark of 38-24 which included three Mid-American Conference titles and trips to the Motor City Bowl in 2003 and to the GMAC Bowl in 2004 and 2008. He started 34 career games and earned second team All-MAC honors as a senior in 2007 for head coach Gregg Brandon.
Nystrom also was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team, was named to the MAC All-Academic first team in 2007, was inducted into the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society in 2008, and was a finalist for the Bowling Green Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2008. He also earned Bowling Green’s Top Offensive Lineman Award as a senior in 2007.
Nystrom, who will pursue a master’s degree in higher education administration at Delaware, began his coaching career at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. this past fall and helped lead the team to a 10-2 record and an undefeated North Coast Athletic Conference title for head coach Erik Raeburn.
The Little Giants, who were ranked as high as No. 2 nationally at one point during the season, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Five of Nystrom’s players earned All-NCAC honors.
