Delaware vs. New Hampshire (Parent's Day) Sept. 26, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. W 31-7
Sophomore quarterback Matt Nagy made the
most of his first start of the season, throwing for
a career-high 244 yards and two touchdowns and
running for another score to lead the No. 9 ranked
University of Delaware to a 31-7 Atlantic 10
Football Conference victory over New Hampshire
before 22,043 Parents Day fans Saturday at Delaware
Stadium. Nagy, who had been alternating with junior
Brian Ginn for the first three games before
Ginn went down for the season with a broken leg,
hit on his first 11 passes of the game as the Hens
(3-1, 1-1 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 21-0
halftime lead and never looked back in posting its
second straight win. New Hampshire, coming off a
70-10 win over East Stroudsburg a week ago, fell to
1-3, 0-3 despite a record-setting performance by
senior tailback Jerry Azumah who rushed for 196
yards and became the all-time Atlantic 10
Conference career leader in rushing yards and
all-purpose yards. The Hens jumped out to a 21-0
halftime lead as Nagy hit Andre Thompson on
a 24-yard screen pass for a touchdown on the Hens'
first drive of the game and added a 15-yard scoring
toss to senior Eddie Conti with 10:08 left
in the half. Conti caught a career-high nine passes
for 139 yards on the day, his school record third
straight 100-yard effort. Craig Cummings
capped the first half scoring with a four-yard run
with 2:25 left in the half.
"I was very much impressed with Matt's
throwing," said Delaware head coach Tubby
Raymond. "It seemed as if he couldn't miss
today. He and Eddie put on quite a show. We played
very well today, at least for the first half. We
didn't stick with it but at the same time we beat a
very good New Hampshire team. Azumah was as good as
advertised. He can find the holes and really make
you look bad."
Nagy, who added a seven yard scoring run early
in the third quarter, threw for over 200 yards for
the third straight game to tie a school record last
set by current Kansas City Chief Rich Gannon in
1985. Nagy connected on his first 11 throws vs. UNH
to extend his streak to 12 and tie another school
mark. New Hampshire, which had won three straight
over Delaware at Delaware Stadium since 1974,
scored its only touchdown with 11:24 left in the
third quarter when Azumah raced untouched 44 yards
for the score. Azumah, coming off a 259-yard
rushing effort vs. East Stroudsburg, upped his
career rushing total to 4,641 to break the A-10
mark of 4,624 held by Massachusetts' Rene Ingoglia
in 1992-95. Azumah also set a A-10 record for
all-purpose yards with 6,476, surpassing the mark
of former UNH standout Barry Bourassa. The Delaware
defense, last in the conference against the pass at
372 yards allowed per game, held UNH check with 90
yards and intercepted two Wildcat passes (Mike
Furline and Lamont Watson) inside their
own 10-yard line.
