2 overtimes
September 2, 1999 * Delaware Stadium
NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Butter
Pressey scored on a 19-yard touchdown run in the second
overtime period and the Blue Hen defense held as No. 11
University of Delaware opened the 1999 season by defeating
No. 25 William & Mary 34-27, in front of a sellout crowd
of 22,038 at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic 10)
avenged a 52-45 loss to the Tribe (0-1) a year ago in
Williamsburg, VA and won their sixth straight season opener.
Pressey's first career touchdown run
could not have come at a better time as he scampered down
the left sideline on a third-and- four play to give Delaware
the lead.
Pressey set up Delaware's tying score in
the first overtime with a 21-yard run on the Blue Hens'
first play. The Blue Hens settled for a Garon Sizemore
25-yard field goal after Pressey's first overtime
scamper to counter Brett Sterba's 33-yard field goal at the
end of William & Mary's first
extra-possession.
Delaware jumped out to a 7-0 lead by
scoring on its first possession. Derrick Downs capped
an eight-play, 83-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown
run.
The Tribe tied the game on a 47-yard
touchdown pass from starting quarterback Daron Pope to David
Conklin.
However, Delaware's Brett Veach
returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards, the third longest
kickoff run in school history, for his first career
touchdown.
Sizemore and Sterba traded field goals to
put the Hens up 17-10 at halftime.
The Tribe opened the second half with a
30-yard scoring toss from Pope to Komlan Lonergan to tie the
game but the Hens went up again midway through the final
quarter when redshirt freshman Ricardo Walker scooped
up a fumble by William & Mary backup quarterback David
Corley and ran in two yards for a 24-17 lead.
William & Mary then sent the game
into overtime when third level quarterback Kevin Carty, a
transfer from North Carolina, connected with Michael Partlow
on a 13-yard scoring pass.
Delaware quarterback Matt Nagy hit
on 16 of 35 passes for 204 yards while Jamin Elliott
caught six passes for 112 yards. Pressey finished with a
career-high 72 yards.
Pope hit on 14 of 27 passes for 149 yards
and two touchdowns and Carty was 6 of 15 for 91 yards. David
Conklin caught six passes for 132 yards and Hameen Ali
rushed for a game-high 81 yards.
