Delaware's Maguire
Wins Medalist Honors; Blue Hens Place
Fourth
EASTON, MD -- University of Delaware
sophomore Terry Maguire won a three-man playoff to
take medalist honors and lead the Blue Hens to a fourth
place finish at the Scotty Duncan Memorial Golf Tournament
Saturday at Hog Neck Golf Club.
Maguire, a sophomore from Cornwall, NY
(Cornwall HS), shot a five over par 36-hole total of
74-75=149 to tie Towson's Greg Cote and Lehigh's Bowen
Osborn and then won on the first playoff hole. Maguire
became the first Blue Hen player to win the tournament since
Darrell Clayton tied for medalist honors in 1989.
Delaware's fourth place finish was the
best for the Blue Hens since a third place finish in 1990.
Binghamton won the team title with a two-day total of 612
over the par 72, 7,093-yard course to outdistance runner-up
Towson (615), Navy (618), and Delaware (620) in the 10-team
field. Binghamton was led by Hal Berman who placed fourth
with a 76-74=150.
The annual tournament honors the memory
of the late R.B. "Scotty" Duncan, longtime University
of Delaware golf coach and athletics
administrator.
Also for the Blue Hens, senior Mark
Swinger (Liberty/Warrenton, VA) shot 75-80=155 to place
15th overall while sophomore Jason Phinney (Milton,
Mass. HS) was tied for 18th (77-81=158), freshman Eric
Stepanian (Simsbury, Conn. HS) was tied for 27th
(79-82=161), and senior Mike Ladden
(Conestoga/Berwyn, PA) was tied for 30th
(83-79=162).
The Blue Hens will resume play this
Monday and Tuesday when they take part in the America East
Championships at Long Island National Golf Club in
