Sheldon Leads Hen Golfers Once Again

LEESBURG, VA -- Junior Cory Sheldon shot a 36-hole total of 158 to tie for 29th overall and lead the University of Delaware men's golf team to a 16th place finish at the Georgetown Invitational Monday at Lansdowne Resort.

The tournament closed out the fall season for the Blue Hens, who will resume the season March 5-6 at the Northwood University Invitational at West Palm Beach (Fla.) Country Club.

Sheldon followed a two over par 74 Sunday with an 84 Monday to finish at 158 to tie for 29th place overall. Sheldon, a former state champion at Newark High School and a transfer from UNC-Wilmington, led the Blue Hens in five of six tournaments this fall.

Penn State won the team title with a score of 606, edging Seton Hall by winning on the first playoff hole. Eastern Michigan was third in the 16-team field with 610 followed by host Georgetown (618) and Pennsylvania (626). Delaware placed 16th with a score of 663, four back from the Georgetown Gray team.

Seton Hall's Eugene Smith won the individual title with a one over par 74-71=145.

Also for Delaware, freshman Mike Hoffman was 58th (84-81=165), Gerry Newell placed 69th (85-84=169), and Jason Phinney (83-90=173) and Kevin Exley (84-89=173) tied for 78th place.
