Blue Hens Tie
for 12th at St. John's Tournament

FARMINGDALE, NY -- The University
of Delaware mens' golf team placed tied for 12th place out
of 20 teams at the McLaughlin Invitational hosted by St.
John's University Friday at the Black Course at Bethpage
Golf Club.
The Blue Hens shot a two-day, 36-hole
team total of 639 (315-324) to tie Navy for 12th place in
the team standings. Host St. John's won the team title with
a score of 586, downing runner-up North Carolina-Greensboro
(597) by 11 strokes. The tournament was held at the
7,399-yard par 71 course that will be the site of the 2002
United States Open.
Jason Phinney led the Blue Hens
with a 43rd place finish, shooting 78-80=158 in the
106-player field. Also for the Hens, Gerry Newell was
55th (76-84=160;), Cory Sheldon (84-78=162) was 60th,
Eric Stepanian (81-82=163) was 65th, and Mike
Hoffman (80-87=167) was 79th.
St. John's duo of Jesse Fitzgerald and
Andrew Svoboda finished first and second respectively in the
meet. Fitzgerald shot a two-day total of 72-67=139, good for
three under par. Svoboda was just four shots behind at
143.
Delaware will next compete at the Temple
University Owl Classic Oct. 6-7.
