 Blue Hens Place Second, Enjoy Best Finish Since 1997-98; Korb Fourth Overall

 

BALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware men's golf team improved 10 strokes on the second day of play Saturday to place second overall at the Towson University Invitational at Bonnie View Country Club.

The Blue Hens, led by senior Jacob Korb (Council Rock/Newtown, PA) who placed fourth overall, carded a two-day total of 311-301 over the 36-hole event to place second behind host Towson (294-289). Delaware's second place finish was its best in a tournament since winning the America East team title Sept. 18-19, 1997.

St. Francis was third in the 13-team field followed by Long Island, Drexel, Villanova, Towson Gold, Manhattan, Hofstra, Robert Morris, Fairleigh Dickinson, Quinnipiac, and LaSalle.

Korb shot a two-day total of 72-77=145 to lead the Hens and give Delaware its best individual finish in a tournament since current teammate Mike Hoffman placed third at the Navy Invitational last April 6-7. Also for the Hens, sophomore Chase Miller (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) placed eighth overall, shooting scores of 80-72=152.

Towson claimed four of the top five individual spots in the tournament led by overall champion Mike Larkin who carded a two-day score of 74-71=145. He shot an even par 71 on Saturday to clinch the win, ousting teammate Billy Wingerd who shot 73-73=146 for the tournament.

Delaware will next compete at the Goldey Beacom Invitational Sept. 18.
