Blue Hens Finish in 9th Place
as Spiker Leads Squad Again
MIDLOTHIAN, VA - The University of
Delaware men's golf team improved eight more strokes but
couldn't gain ground once again and placed ninth after the
final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf
Championships Tuesday at Independence Golf Club.
The Blue Hens, who placed eighth a year
ago, shot 318 in Sunday's first round but improved to 306 on
Monday and 298 on Tuesday to finish with a team score of
922. Old Dominion, which entered Tuesday's round in third
place, shot a team score of 279 on Tuesday to tie second
round leader UNC Wilmington for first place with team scores
of 866.
The Monarchs captured the team title on a
one-hole playoff tie breaker. It was the first CAA golf
title in school history for Old Dominion, which ended
Virginia Commonwealth's seven-year hold on the team title.
Towson placed third at 870 followed by VCU, William &
Mary, James Madison, George Mason, Drexel, Delaware, and
Hofstra. Drexel edged the Blue Hens by just three strokes
for eighth place.
Delaware sophomore Dan Spiker led
the Blue Hens at the event for the second straight year as
he fired a one-over par 73 over the 7,127-yard course
Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole total of 225, tied for 19th
overall. Spiker, who posted 34 pars during this year's
tournament, placed 28th last season as a
freshman.
Delaware senior Jake Korb and
freshman Devin Milowe tied for 36th with totals of
232. Milowe shot a 74 and Korb fired a 78 Tuesday for the
Blue Hens. Korb improved from a 43rd place finish a year
ago. Also for the Hens, sophomore Chase Miller placed
42nd (81-80-73=234) and freshman J.J. Oakley placed
45th overall (82-79-81=242).
Old Dominion's Geoffrey Harris, the 34th
ranked player in NCAA Division I by Golfstat, captured
medalist honors with a CAA record score of 13 under par.
Harris shot 70 on Sunday, 66 on Monday, and 67 Tuesday to
finish at 203, two strokes better than defending champion
Ted Brown of VCU, who shot 69-68-68=205. Brown had set the
CAA record a year ago when he won with a score of 12-under
par.
Billy Wingerd of Towson placed third with
a score of 74-7267=213 while four golfers, including Tony
DiBitetto, Bryan Joyce, and Marc-Andre Roy of UNC
Wilmington, tied for fourth at 216.
Delaware will end its season this weekend
when the Blue Hens host the Scotty Duncan Memorial
Tournament at Frog Hollow Golf Club in Middletown,
DE.
