Spiker Wins Medalist Honors and Leads Hens to Team Title

MIDDLETOWN, DE - The University of Delaware men's golf team finished its 2002-03 season on a high note Sunday as the Blue Hens, led by tournament medalist Dan Spiker, captured the Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament title at Frog Hollow Golf Club.

The Blue Hens, who won their first tournament of the spring and their third of the year, shot a team score of 619 to finish 13 stroke ahead of runner-up Drexel with 632. The University of Ottawa was third with 667, the Delaware Gold team was fourth with 667, and Goldey Beacom was fifth with 695 over the 6,124-yard, par 71 course.

Delaware earlier this year captured tournament titles at Goldey-Beacom and at the U.S. Military Academy.

The annual tournament honors the late Scotty Duncan, the long-time UD golf coach and associate director of athletics who founded the tournament as the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association championships.

Spiker, a sophomore who led Delaware with a 19th place finish at last week's Colonial Athletic Association championships, followed his score of 73 Saturday with a 79 Sunday to hold off teammate Jake Korb (80-73=153) and Simon Camirand of Ottawa (76-77=153) for medalist honors. Korb's 73 was the best score of the day.

Spiker became the first UD golfer to win a tournament title since Terry Maguire won the Scotty Duncan Memorial individual crown in 2000.

Delaware's Blue team placed four players in the top 10. In addition to Spiker and Korb, freshman Devin Milowe placed fifth (74-82=156) and J.J. Oakley was ninth (78-82=160).

Delaware's Gold (second) team was led by freshman Steve Banks who placed 12th overall with a score of 85-78=163 and by senior Mike Hoffman who placed 18th (78-91=169.
