Blue Hens Open Spring Season
With 17th Place Finish
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL -- The
University of Delaware men's golf squad opened the 2003
spring season with a 17th place team finish at the Treasure
Coast WTC Hero's Classic hosted by St. John's University
Friday at the 6,581-yard, par 72 Port St. Lucie PGA Country
Club.
Florida Gulf Coast University topped the
18-team field, shooting a 292 each day over the two-day,
36-hole tournament for a team score of 584. Bethune-Cookman
was second with 587 while Liberty University was third at
598 and Navy and Guilford tied for fourth with scores of
604.
Delaware carded a team score of 660,
shooting 337 on Thursday and improving 14 strokes to 323 on
Friday. Creighton placed finished last in 18th place with a
two-day total of 667.
Leading the Blue Hens was sophomore
Chase Miller (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE), who placed
45th overall at 157 after following an 84 Thursday with a 73
on Friday, the lowest score of the week for
Delaware.
Also for the Hens, Devin Milowe
(Eastern/Voorhees, NJ) placed 71st (82-83=165), Daniel
Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD) was 80th
(83-86=169), and Mike Hoffman (Prospect/Mt. Prospect,
IL) was 94th (88-93=181).
Andrew Svoboda of St. John's and Jerry
Chen of Temple tied for medalist honors with scores of 142.
Svoboda shot 71 both days while Chen followed a 72 Thursday
with a 70 Friday. Bethune-Cookman's Adam Auger placed tied
for third with a 143, including a tournament-low three under
par 69 on Thursday.
Delaware will return to action March
29-30 at the Towson (Md.) Invitational.
