April 18, 2004 Blue Hens Finish 9th for Second Straight Year; Banks Hens' Top Finisher SUFFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware improved 12 strokes from the previous day and finished in ninth place after the final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships Sunday at Nansemond River Golf Club. Delaware, which also placed ninth in 2003, shot a 301 on Sunday and finished with a team score of 922, 17 strokes behind eighth place finisher William & Mary. UNC Wilmington captured the team title, and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth, with a team score of 867, nine strokes better than runner-up and defending champion Old Dominion. Towson was third followed by James Madison, Drexel, Virginia Commonwealth, George Mason, William & Mary, Delaware, and Hofstra. The Blue Hens were led by junior Steve Banks (Freehold/Freehold, NJ), who shot a 75 on the 7,032-yard, par 72 course Sunday to finish 25th in the team standings with a 54-hole total of 228. Also for Delaware, freshman Joe McLister (Loudoun County/Leesburg, VA) placed 30th at 231 (76-79-76), junior Dan Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD), the team's top CAA finisher the last two seasons, shot an even par 72 Sunday and was 33rd at 232 (81-79-72), and sophomore J.J. Oakley (Cape Henlopen/Lewes, DE) was 36th at 235 (78-79-78). Junior team captain Chase Miller (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) shot 79 and 77 the first two rounds but withdrew from the tournament Sunday. Tournament individual champion Billy Wingerd of Towson fired a 72 Sunday to finish at 313 in a three-way tie before defeating James Madison's Jay Woodson and Old Dominion's Greg Sampson in a playoff. UNC Wilmington's Derek Brown shot 214 and finished fourth. Delaware will close out the 2004 season next weekend, April 24-25, when the Blue Hens host the Scotty Duncan Memorial Golf Tournament at Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown, DE.
