WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware golf team posted a team score of 309 and sits in 11th place on Friday after the first day of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Drexel shot a 288 and leads the three-day tournament, one stroke ahead of Georgia State at 289. UNC Wilmington is third at 290, while defending champion Old Dominion is fourth at 291 and VCU rounds out the top five at 294. George Mason is in sixth place at 295, followed by William & Mary at 298, Hofstra at 302, Towson at 305, James Madison at 307, and the Blue Hens.
Delaware freshman Kevin McLister is tied for 18th in the individual standings after he shot a three over par 36-38-74 on the par 71, 6,738-yard Gold Course. McLister recorded birdies on three of the first six holes and was even par through the front nine before shooting three over par on the back nine.
Junior Tommy Ellison (at right) is tied for 30th place as he shot a 39-37-76 on Friday, five over par. Ellison posted his only birdie of the day on the 12th hole for the Blue Hens. Fellow junior Steve Boerner, who shot a seven over par 38-40-78, is tied for 43rd place at the championships. Boerner birdied the fifth hole and was just two over par through the front nine before shooting five over par on the back nine.
Senior Britt Murdoch is tied for 48th place after shooting a 39-42-81, 10 over par, while freshman Colin Smith is tied for 53rd place after he shot a 14 over par 39-46-85. Smith posted consecutive birdies on the eighth and ninth holes to finish the front nine just three over par, but shot 11 over par on the back nine.
Joel Sjoholm of Georgia State leads the individual standings after shooting a six under par 33-32-65 on Friday, while Will Shambley of UNC Wilmington is two shots behind after he shot a four under par 35-32-67. Sean Semenetz of Drexel sits in third place after shooting a two under par 31-38-69, while four golfers are tied for fourth at one under par 70.
The championships continue Saturday before concluding Sunday at the Golden Horseshoe.
