Blue Hens Move Up To Ninth Place Following Second Day of Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware golf team recorded a team score of 291 on Saturday to move up to ninth place following the second day of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

The Blue Hens entered the second day of the tournament in 11th place after shooting a 309 on Friday, but Delaware improved by 18 strokes on Saturday with its 291 team score, the third best score on the day.

Georgia State, the 48th ranked team in Division I, leads the championships with a one over par team score of 569, 15 strokes ahead of second place UNC Wilmington at 584. Old Dominion is in third place at 585, William & Mary is fourth at 590, and Drexel and George Mason are tied for fifth at 592.

VCU sits in seventh place at 593, followed by Towson at 595, Delaware at 600, James Madison at 607 and Hofstra at 612.

Blue Hen junior Tommy Ellison (at right) shot a three under par 68 on Saturday, tied for the second best score of the day, and is currently tied for seventh place in the individual standings with a two over par score of 76-68-144. Ellison birdied the fourth, sixth and seventh holes to finish the front nine one under par, and finished his round by posting birdies on four of the final six holes.

Freshman Kevin McLister and senior Britt Murdoch are each tied for 42nd place at 13 over par at the tournament. McLister shot a 10 over par 81 on the par 71, 6,738-yard Gold Course on Saturday, has recorded a 74-81-155 through two days. Murdoch shot a three over par 74 on Saturday, and has posted an 81-74-155 score. He birdied the sixth and seventh holes Saturday and finished the front nine one over par before shooting two over par on the back nine.

UD junior Steve Boerner shot a seven over par 78 for the second straight day on Saturday and is in a tie for 45th place with a 14 over par score of 78-78-156. Boerner posted birdies on the second, eighth and 15th holes during his round on Saturday.

Freshman Colin Smith bounced back from his 85 on Friday to shoot an even par 71 on Saturday, and is also tied for 45th place with a 14 over par score of 85-71-156. Smith birdied the sixth hole to finish the front nine one over par, and was one under on the back nine after birdies on the 11th and 17th holes.

Joel Sjoholm of Georgia State, the fourth ranked player in Division I, leads the individual standings with a two-day nine under par score of 65-68-133. Will Shambley of UNC Wilmington is three strokes behind with a six under par score of 67-69-136, while Brent Paladino of William & Mary shot a six under par 65 on Saturday to move into third place at 73-65-138, four under par.

The championships conclude Sunday at the Golden Horseshoe.
