WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware golf team shot a 299 on Sunday and finished in seventh place with a three-day score of 899 at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships held Friday through Sunday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Georgia State, the 48th ranked team in Division I, easily won the tournament with a three-day score of 843, nine under par. Defending champion Old Dominion finished in second place 25 strokes behind with an 868 while UNC Wilmington was third at 872, William & Mary placed fourth at 877, and VCU rounded out the top five at 878.
Towson finished at sixth place at 897, two strokes ahead of Delaware, which finished at 899. The seventh place finish was the third best for the Blue Hens in their seven seasons in the conference. Drexel came in eighth place at 901 while George Mason was ninth at 902, James Madison placed 10th at 910, and Hofstra finished 11th at 921.
Delaware junior Tommy Ellison shot a six over par 77 on Sunday on the par 71, 6,738-yard Gold Course and finished in a tie for 15th place in the individual standings with a three-day score of 76-68-77-221, eight over par. Ellison birdied the second and 12th holes during his round on Sunday. Ellison’s 15th place finish was the second highest ever for a Blue Hen at the CAA Championships, behind only Joe McLister’s 10th place finish at the 2006 tournament.
UD senior Britt Murdoch (at right) had the best day by a Blue Hen on Sunday, as he shot an even par 71 to finish in a tie for 27th place with a three-day score of 81-74-71-226, 13 over par. Murdoch posted an eagle on the sixth hole, the only eagle by a Blue Hen at the tournament, and had just two bogeys on the day to finish at even par.
Freshman Kevin McLister shot a three over par 74 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 36th place with a 74-81-74-229 three-day score, 16 over par. McLister birdied the fifth and 13th holes during his round on Sunday. Fellow freshman Colin Smith shot a six over par 77 on Sunday as he placed 45th with a three-day score of 85-71-77-233, 20 over par. Smith recorded a team-high three birdies during his Sunday round as he birdied the seventh, 11th and 18th holes.
Junior Steve Boerner finished in a tie for 47th place with a three-day score of 78-78-79-235 after shooting an eight over par 79 on Sunday. Boerner birdied the second and 15th holes during his final round.
Joel Sjoholm, the fourth ranked player in the country, took home medalist honors by winning the tournament with a three-day score of 65-68-68-201, 12 under par, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Brent Paladino of William & Mary finished six under par at 73-65-69-207, while Will Shambley of UNC Wilmington was third with a five under par score of 67-69-72-208.
The Blue Hens close out their 2008 spring season on April 26-27 when Delaware competes in the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia.
