NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware men's golf head coach Mike Keogh announced Wednesday that Tommy Ellison (at right) has been selected as captain of the 2008-09 Blue Hen golf squad.
Ellison, a native of Bethany Beach, DE who will be a senior next year, led Delaware with a 74.85 stroke average this season, the fifth lowest average in UD history. He finished in 15th place at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, the second highest finish by a Blue Hen in the seven years Delaware has been in the league.
Ellison, who also was Delaware’s top finisher at the Elon, Old Dominion and Lafayette Invitationals, was named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week on April 14. He finished second at the Lafayette Invitational, and will enter his senior season with a 75.38 career stroke average, the second lowest in school history.
“Tommy has played an important role in the golf team’s success over the last three years,” Keogh said. “He has emerged as a true leader and is positioned to assume the duties of captain for the 2008-09 campaign.”
Additionally Keogh announced that fellow junior Steve Boerner earned the Grinder Award for desire, determination and commitment to his game. Boerner, a native of Bethlehem, PA, averaged 80.09 strokes per round in 11.5 rounds during the 2007-08 season. He finished 43rd at the Lafayette Invitational after shooting two rounds of 78, his lowest rounds of the year. Boerner’s career average of 77.44 shots per round currently ranks 10th in Delaware history.
