University of Delaware Golfers Finish Third at Hofstra Invitational; Three Hens Finish in Top 15

FARMINGDALE, NY -- The University of Delaware placed three golfers in the top 15 and shot a team score of 298, but it wasn’t enough to hold on to a first round lead and the Blue Hens placed third in the final day of the Hofstra Invitational Saturday at Bethpage State Park Golf Course.

Siena shot 13 strokes better than its Friday score and captured the team title with a two-day, 36-hole total of 587. Bucknell shot a 290 Saturday and finished second at 590 and Delaware shot 298 to place third at 594 in the 14-team field. Hofstra, Laval, and Fordham closed out the top five.

Delaware posted its second top three and fifth top 10 finish of the fall season. The Blue Hens will close out the fall season Oct. 29-30 at the Old Dominion Invitational at Sea Scape Golf Club at Kitty Hawk, NC.

The Blue Hens placed three players in the top 15 as first-day leader Jeff Griest shot scores of 70 and 79 over the 6,766-yard, par 70 course to finish tied for 11th at 149. Freshman teammate Kevin McLister tied for 11th place with scores of 75 and 74 while Britt Murdoch (at right) was 14th with scores of 76-74=150.

Also for the Hens, Jason Bernstein was 21st (78-73=151) and freshman Colin Smith was 23rd (77-75=152).

Siena's Dan Abbondandolo was the individual winner as he shot scores of 71 and 69 to finish at 140 and won over Fordham's Nico Mizono on the first sudden death playoff hole.
