EASTON, PA -- University of Delaware junior Tommy Ellison (at right) shot a 73 on Sunday and finished at even par for the weekend to place second in the individual standings and lead the Blue Hen golf team to a third place finish out of 25 teams at the Lafayette Invitational.
After shooting a 301 on Saturday, the Blue Hens beat their team score by three strokes by shooting a 298 on Sunday to finish at 599. The two-day tournament marked the third time this season Delaware finished in third place, its highest finishes of the year. Bucknell captured the invitational with a team score of 594, finishing three strokes ahead of Drexel at 597. Mount St. Mary’s placed fourth at 606, while Monmouth rounded out the top five with a 609 team score.
Ellison’s second place finish was his best career finish and marked the third time in his career he has placed in the top 10. Ellison, who shot a 71-73-144 to finish at even par on the par 72, 6,703-yard course, also posted his best score in a two-round tournament in his career.
UD senior Britt Murdoch shot a two over par 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th place in the individual standings at 75-74-149, five over par. Freshman Colin Smith shot a one over par 73 on Sunday as he tied for 14th place with a six over par score of 77-73-150.
Junior Steve Boerner, who shot a 78 on both days, finished in a tie for 43rd place with a 12 over par score of 78-78-156, while Kevin McLister also shot a 78 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 66th place at 82-78-160, 16 over par.
Mike Magalski of St. Francis (PA) won medalist honors by shooting 72-71-143, one under par.
The Blue Hens return to action this Friday through Sunday when Delaware competes in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, VA.
