NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware golf recruits Stephen Scialo and Greg Matthias each won an amateur championship during the month of July.

Scialo, a native of Clarkstown, NY who will be a freshman on the 2008-09 Blue Hen golf team, earned medalist honors at the Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur held in Paramus, NJ on July 14. Scialo shot a 65 for the tournament, tying the course record, and made all 12 of his putts inside eight feet. He finished the round with eight birdies, just one bogey, and only 25 putts.

Greg Matthias, a Wilmington, DE native and Salesianum graduate who will also be a freshman at Delaware this fall, captured the State Golf Association Junior Championship last Wednesday and Thursday.

Matthias shot a 71 on Wednesday and a 73 on Thursday to finish with a four over par score of 144 at Brandywine Country Club. Matthias entered the 17th hole on Thursday tied with Salesianum teammate Jerry Temple Jr., but made par on the final two holes to win the tournament.

Scialo, Matthias and the rest of the 2008-09 Blue Hens open their 2008 fall season on September 11-12 when they compete in the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, MD.
