KITTY HAWK, NC -- University of Delaware freshman Colin Smith tied for the lowest round in school history by shooting a 66 on Tuesday as the Blue Hens finished in a tie for 19th place out of 21 teams at the Seascape Collegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Old Dominion.
Smith, a native of West Chester, PA (Salesianum-DE) shot a 66 on the par 70, 6,131-yard course to tie the school record set by Kevin Gallagher, who also shot a 66 at the District II Tournament in Easton, MD on May 3, 1987. Joe McLister twice shot a 67 for Delaware, while Josh Williamowsky also shot a 67 at the Seascape Golf Course at last year’s tournament.
Smith, who shot an 86 in the first round on Monday before improving by 20 strokes Tuesday, finished tied for 71st place with a 12 over par score of 152. Tommy Ellison (at right) led the Blue Hens by finishing tied for 55th place with a 10 over par score of 76-74=150, while Kevin McLister also tied for 71st place after shooting 80-72=152.
Britt Murdoch shot 84-78=162 to finish in 101st place at 22 over par, while Jason Bernstein withdrew after shooting an 80 on Monday while battling a stomach ailment.
The Blue Hens, who shot a team score of 320 on Monday before improving by 30 strokes to shoot 290 on Tuesday, finished tied with Saint Joseph’s with 610 team scores. Hartford won the team title with a nine over par score of 569, ahead of Campbell at 572, Wofford at 574, and Old Dominion at 576.
Jordan Utley of Richmond earned medalist honors after shooting a three under par score of 67-70=137, finishing one stroke ahead of Elon’s Jimmy Lytle, Hartford’s A.J. Oleksak, and Wofford’s Garrett Medeiros.
The Seascape Collegiate marks the end of the 2007 fall season for the Blue Hen golf team. Delaware will return to action on March 17-18 when it competes in the William & Mary Invitational.
