Delaware Golfers in Tenth Place Following First Day of Colonial Athletic Association Championships

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The University of Delaware golf team recorded a 321 team score and sits in 10th place out of 11 teams Friday following the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships being held at Callaway Gardens Golf Course.

Defending conference champion Georgia State leads the tournament with a three under par team score of 285; five shots ahead of VCU at 290. James Madison (293), William & Mary (300), and UNC Wilmington (304) round out of the top five.

Blue Hen sophomore Colin Smith (at right), senior Jeff Griest and senior Tommy Ellison each shot an eight over par 80 to tie for 36th place in the individual standings on the par 72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Course.

Smith birdied the first hole and finished 40-40-80 on Friday. Griest posted a team-high three birdies on the day as he birdied the fifth, 14th and 18th holes during his 38-42-80 round, while Ellison birdied the second and 13th holes during his 40-40-80 round.

Freshman Greg Matthias shot a nine over par 40-41-81 to finish tied for 44th place, while sophomore Justin Martinson birdied the fourth hole during his 10 over par round of 39-43-82 and is tied for 46th place.

Lanto Griffin of VCU leads the individual standings after he shot a three under par 69 during the first round, while Jason Chun of William & Mary and Allen John of Georgia State are each tied for second with two under par scores of 70.

The three-day CAA Championships continue Saturday and Sunday at Callaway Gardens.
