Blue Hens Move Up To Ninth Place Following Second Day of Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The University of Delaware golf team improved its team score by 14 stokes by recording a 307 on Saturday to move into ninth place following the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Callaway Gardens Golf Course.

The Blue Hens, who shot a 321 to place 10th following Friday’s first round, moved up one spot with a two-day team score of 628. Defending league champion Georgia State continues to lead the tournament with a two-day score of 579, eight strokes ahead of James Madison at 587. VCU and William & Mary are tied for third place at 591, while UNC Wilmington sits in fifth place at 601.

Delaware senior co-captain Tommy Ellison (at right) shot a team-best one over par 73 Saturday on the par 72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Course. Ellison recorded birdies on the second, seventh and 15th holes as he finished the front nine one over par and the back nine even par. Ellison now has a two day score of 80-73-153, and is tied for 24th place in the individual standings at nine over par.

Freshman Greg Matthias shot a four over par 76 on Saturday, as he birdied the 15th and 18th holes during his round. Matthias is currently tied for 36th place with a two-day score of 81-76-157, 13 over par.

Sophomore Justin Martinson also improved his round by five strokes on Saturday, as he shot a five over par 77. Martinson, who birdied the seventh, 10th and 17th holes, is tied for 43rd place with a 15 over par score of 82-77-159.

Sophomore Colin Smith shot a nine over par 81 on Saturday by posting late birdies on the 15th and 18th holes. Smith is currently tied for 47th place with a two-day score of 80-81-161, 17 over par.

Senior Jeff Griest birdied the sixth, 12th and 14th holes during his 12 over par round of 84 on Saturday. Griest is in 50th place entering the final day with a 20 over par score of 80-84-164.

Allen John of Georgia State shot a seven under par 65 on Saturday and currently leads the individual standings with a two-round score of 70-65-135, seven strokes ahead of Lanto Griffin of VCU at 69-73-142.

The CAA Championships conclude Sunday with a single round at Callaway Gardens.
