Delaware Improves To Seventh Place Finish at Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The University of Delaware golf team shot a 298 on Sunday to move up two spots and finish in seventh place with a three-day team score of 926 this weekend at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Callaway Gardens.

VCU and Georgia State tied for first place with 877 team scores, with the Rams winning the team title on the first playoff hole to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

William & Mary finished third with an 884 team score while UNC Wilmington, James Madison and Old Dominion each tied for fourth at 891. The Blue Hens were seventh, followed by George Mason at 928, Drexel at 932, Towson at 952, and Hofstra at 1030.

Senior captain Tommy Ellison (at right) capped his Blue Hen career with a three over par 75 Sunday on the par 72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Course. Ellison, who birdied the sixth and seventh holes during his final round, finished in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings with a 12 over par score of 80-73-75-228.

Freshman Greg Matthias posted birdies on the second, third and sixth holes to shoot a three over par 75 on Sunday. Matthias finished in 31st place with a three-day score of 81-76-75-232, 16 over par.

Sophomore Justin Martinson recorded birdies on the seventh and 11th holes as he also finished with a three over par 75 in his final round on Sunday. Martinson finished with an 18 over par score of 82-77-75-234 to finish in a tie for 35th place.

Sophomore Colin Smith, who birdied the third, seventh and ninth holes on Sunday, shot a two over par 74 during his final round. Smith, who finished in a tie for 37th place, recorded a three-day score of 80-81-74-235, 19 over par.

Senior Jeff Griest posted birdies on the seventh and ninth holes during his two over par round of 74 on Sunday. Griest recorded a 22 over par score of 80-84-74-238 to finish in a tie for 44th place.

Allen John of Georgia State captured medalist honors with a five under par 70-65-76-211, finishing two strokes ahead of Eric Onesi of Old Dominion at 74-71-68-213.

The CAA Championships capped a successful 2008-09 season for the Blue Hens, who placed among the top five in eight of 10 tournaments during the year.
