ITHACA, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware golf team won the 15-team Cornell Invitational after Sunday’s scheduled round was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Blue Hens shot a one under par 287 in Saturday’s first round, the only team in the field under par. Siena finished one shot behind the Blue Hens with an even par score of 288, while Columbia placed third with a 290 team score. The tournament victory was the first for Delaware since the Blue Hens captured the Scotty Duncan Invitational on October 7-8, 2007. It was also the first win of a tournament outside the state of Delaware since UD won the Army Invitational on October 5-6, 2002.

Blue Hen freshman Stephen Scialo (at right) led Delaware by shooting a three under par 35-34-69 on the par 72, 6,826-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course to place second overall in the individual standings. Justin Martinson tied for fifth place after shooting a one under par 36-35-71, while Tommy Ellison shot a one over par 37-36-73 to tie for 13th place. Additionally Colin Smith shot a two over par 37-37-74 to tie for 20th place while Kevin McLister shot a three over par 39-36-75 to tie for 29th place.

Siena’s Dan Abbondandolo earned medalist honors after shooting a five under par 35-32-67 on Saturday.

Blue Hens return to action on October 4-5 when Delaware hosts the Scotty Duncan Invitational at White Clay Creek Golf Course in Stanton, Del.
