BETHANY BEACH, Del. -- University of Delaware sophomore Justin Martinson (at right) shot a 74 Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 145 and captured the individual title at the George Washington Invitational at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club.

Martinson, a first-year transfer from Charleston Southern, shot a one-under par 71 over the 6,843-yard course Friday and finished with a 36-hole total of 145, besting runners-up Mark Stevens of Rhode Island and Brandon Rukin of host George Washington by one stroke.

Delaware senior Tommy Ellison also placed in the top 10 as his two-day total of 75 on Friday and 73 on Saturday gave him a total of 148 to place fifth overall and lead the Blue Hens to a fifth place finish in the team standings.

The Blue Hens have now finished fifth or better in all six tournaments this season. Martinson becomes the second Blue Hen to win an individual title this season and the first to win a spring individual championship since Joe McLister won the UD Scotty Duncan Memorial in 2006.

Rhode Island topped the 22-team field with a two-day score of 601 to capture the championship, besting runner-up Longwood by four strokes. Pennsylvania was third followed by Skidmore, Delaware, George Washington, Colgate, Duquesne, Villanova, and Binghamton in the top 10.

Also for the Hens, Greg Matthias placed 40th with a score of 81-76=157, Colin Smith was 63rd with a score of 78-84=162, and Kevin McLister finished 77th with a two-day total of 80-84=164.

Delaware will continue action March 23-24 at the William & Mary/First Market Bank Invitational at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
