CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Blue Hen sophomore Justin Martinson (at right) won a playoff over Brendan Kelly of Villanova to earn medalist honors and lead the University of Delaware golf team to a third place finish out of 21 teams this weekend at the Lafayette Invitational.
Martinson shot an even par on Sunday to finish one over par 73-72-145 this weekend on the par 72, 6,916-yard course at the Center Valley Golf Club. He then birdied the second hole in a sudden death round with Kelly to claim his second individual title this spring. Martinson also won the George Washington Invitational on March 20-21.
Delaware was tied for the team lead with a 306 team score following the first round and improved to a 302 team score on Sunday, but the Blue Hens finished third with a 608 total. Lehigh captured the team title with a 592 team score, while Villanova was second at 607. Delaware has now finished among the top five in eight of nine tournaments in the 2008-09 season.
Senior Jeff Griest shot a three over par 75 on Sunday and finished tied for 17th with a two-round score of 78-75-153, nine over par. Freshman Greg Matthias shot a five over par 77 for the second consecutive day and finished with a 10 over par score of 77-77-154, tied for 21st place.
Senior Tommy Ellison equaled his 78 on Saturday with an another 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 29th place with a two-day score of 156, 12 over par. Freshman Stephen Scialo shot an 81 on Sunday to finish with a 19 over par score of 82-81-163, tied for 68th place.
Delaware takes next weekend off before the Blue Hens compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on April 17-19 at the Callaway Gardens Golf Course in Pine Mountain, Ga.
