Blue Hen Golfers in Eighth Place Following First Day of Navy Fall Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Blue Hen sophomore Colin Smith (at right) shot a one under par 70 to finish in a tie for third place in the individual standings as the University of Delaware golf team sits in eighth place following the first day of the Navy Fall Classic on Friday.

Smith shot a 36 on the front nine before shooting a 34 on the back nine to finish one under par on the par 71, 6,611-yard USNA Golf Course. Lewis Sturdy of George Washington shot a three under par 35-33-68, Dan Abbondandolo of Siena fired a two under par 34-35-69, and Smith was one of five golfers who shot a 70 on Friday.

George Washington leads the 17-team field with a 282 team score following the first of two rounds, while Siena is second at 291 and North Dakota State and Saint Joseph’s are tied for third at 294. The Navy “White” team is fifth at 295, while Navy and St. Francis (PA) are tied for sixth place at 297. The Blue Hens, competing in their 2008 season opener, are eighth at 298, while Pennsylvania (299), Saint Bonaventure (300), and Cornell (300) round out the top 10.

Delaware freshman Stephen Scialo is tied for 38th place in the individual standings after shooting a four over par 38-37-75 in his first collegiate tournament, while sophomore Justin Martinson is tied for 45th place after he shot a five over par 36-40-76 on Friday. Senior Tommy Ellison, who shot a 38-39-77, and freshman Bobby Arthur, who shot a 36-41-77, each finished six over par to finish in a tie for 50th place.

The Navy Fall Classic concludes with a single round on Saturday.
