ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Blue Hen sophomore Colin Smith (at right) shot a 69 on Saturday to earn a second place finish in the individual standings while also leading the University of Delaware golf team to a second place finish in the overall standings at the Navy Fall Classic.
A day after shooting a 70 in the first round of action, Smith shot a two-under par on Saturday to finish three-under for the tournament at the par 71, 6,611-yard USNA Golf Course. Led by his performance, the Blue Hens eventually made up significant ground on the final day of the tournament, moving from eighth place on Friday to second following the final round. Of the 17 teams in the tournament, only George Washington finished with a better score.
The Colonials won the invitational with a team score of 572, followed by Delaware at 581. Saint Joseph’s was third at 586, while Navy was fourth at 587 and Siena placed fifth at 591.
Lewis Sturdy of George Washington took home medalist honors after shooting a 68-70-138 to finish four under par for the tournament. Smith finished second at 139, the lowest two-round score of his UD career. Dan Abbondandolo of Siena placed third with a two under par score of 69-71-140, while Michael Blodgett of Pennsylvania (73-69-142), Dan Bosse of Cornell (71-71-142), and Cole Turner of George Washington (72-70-142) each tied for fourth place after finishing at even par.
Blue Hen freshman Stephen Scialo was tied for 38th place following Friday’s action after shooting a 75, but he fired a one under par 70 on Saturday to finish the tournament tied for 12th place with a three over par score of 145. Senior captain Tommy Ellison also made a big improvement, as he followed his 77 on Friday with a 71 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 18th place with a six over par score of 148.
Sophomore Justin Martinson tied for 24th place after he shot a seven over par 76-73-149 on the weekend, while freshman Bobby Arthur tied for 62nd place after shooting 77-78-155, 13 over par, in his first collegiate tournament.
Delaware takes next weekend off before competing in the Cornell Invitational on September 27-28 in Ithaca. N.Y.
