RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore Colin Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Golfer of the Week on Thursday after his impressive performance at the Scotty Duncan Invitational last weekend.

Smith earned medalist honors after shooting a 70-67-137 to finish seven under par on the par 72, 6,861-yard course at White Clay Creek Country Club. Smith, whose two-round score of 137 is tied for the third lowest in Blue Hen history, won the tournament by six strokes while leading the Delaware Blue team to a second place finish out of 16 teams.

Smith, a native of West Chester, Pa. (Salesianum - Del.), was tied for the individual lead following Saturday’s first round but shot a 67 on Sunday, tied for the third lowest score in a single round in UD history, to pull away for the win.

Smith finished the front nine in one over par 37 on Saturday, but birdied the 11th, 14th and 18th holes while recording par on the other six on the back nine to finish with a two under par score of 70. He posted birdies on the fourth, eighth and ninth holes while shooting a 33 on Sunday’s front nine, and added birdies on the 12th, 14th and 18th holes on the back nine to finish five under par at 67. Smith recorded six birdies while posting just one bogey during the 36 holes on the weekend.

Smith became the first Blue Hen player to win a tournament individual title since Jason Bernstein also won the Scotty Duncan Invitational on October 7-8, 2006.

Smith and the Blue Hens will be back in action on October 13-14 when they compete in the Frank Landry Invitational hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
