Scialo Leads Blue Hen Golfers To Seventh Place Finish at George Washington Invitational

BETHANY BEACH, Del. -- The University of Delaware golf team posted a 298 team score on Saturday to finish in seventh place out of 16 teams as the Blue Hens opened their 2010 spring season this weekend at the 12th Annual George Washington Invitational.

Missouri cruised to the team title with a three-round score of 820, while Yale finished at 852 to place second. Towson was third at 877, while the host Colonials were fourth at 885. Penn and George Washington “B” tied for fifth at 890, while the Blue Hens were seventh at 891. Rider (909), Monmouth (910), and Colgate (920) rounded out the top 10.

Delaware sophomore Stephen Scialo (at right) shot a season-low 70 on Saturday on the par 72, 6834-yard course at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club to lead the Blue Hens. Scialo, who finished with a two over par score of 72-76-70-218, tied for 13th place in the individual standings.

Justin Martinson entered the day in fourth place after a pair of 70 rounds on Friday, but the junior posted a 79 on Saturday and finished in a tie for 17th place with a three over par score of 70-70-79-219.

Senior captain Mike Barrow, who shot a 75 on Saturday, tied for 42nd place with a three-round score of 82-72-75-229, 13 over par. Junior Kevin McLister posted a 76 in the final round, his lowest score of the weekend, to finish in a tie for 50th place at 79-77-76-232, 16 over par.

Sophomore Greg Matthias finished 19 over par with a three-round score of 77-81-77-235 to tie for 57th place. Additionally, Blue Hen sophomore Bobby Arthur and freshman J.R. Fasy competed in the tournament as individuals. Arthur tied for 61st place with a 20 over par score of 82-73-81-236, while Fasy came in 76th place with a 24 over par score of 84-75-81-240.

Chris Johnson of Missouri earned medalist honors with a 17 under par score of 66-68-65-199, defeating his teammate William Harrold (72-67-66-205) by six strokes.

Delaware returns to action on Monday and Tuesday when the Blue Hens compete in the William & Mary/C&F Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
