GREENVILLE, Del. -- University of Delaware junior-to-be Justin Martinson charged out to a big lead after the first day of the 44th annual Delaware State Golf Association Open Monday at Fieldstone Country Club.
Martinson, a native of Avondale, Pa. (Kennett HS), rose to the top of the 82-player field sank eight birdie putts on the way to a course-record score of 63 in the first round of the day and added a solid 70 later in the day for a 36-hole score of 133 on the 6,748-yard, par 71 course.
He holds a four-stroke lead over Chris Gray and a seven-shot cushion over Old Dominion rival Eric Onesi and Zac Oakley heading into Tuesday’s third and final round.
Martinson was one of five current, former, and future Blue Hen golf team members to make the cut at the tournament.
Blue Hen sophomore Greg Matthias, a graduate of nearby Salesianum, shot scores of 73-69=142 and is eighth, former UD standout Darrell Clayton was tied for 22nd with scores of 75-72=147, Tommy Ellison, who ended his standout career at Delaware this past spring, shot 72-77=149 and is tied for 27th, and J.R. Fasy, who will be a freshman for the Blue Hens this fall, shot scores of 81-71=152 and is tied for 38th place.
Martin, a second-year transfer from Charleston Southern University, ranked No. 2 on the Blue Hens this past season with a 74.59 stroke average and led the team at three tournaments, including capturing medalist honors at George Washington Invitational and Lafayette Invitational during the spring.
