Delaware Golf Team Finishes 13th at Season-Opening Navy Fall Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware golf team recorded a team score of 305 on Sunday and finished with a two-day score of 607 to place 13th out of 17 teams as the Blue Hens opened their 2009 fall season this weekend at the Navy Fall Classic.

Northwestern captured the team title with a 16 under par score of 552, 14 shots ahead of second place Navy at 566. Seton Hall was third at 574, while Villanova was fourth at 577 and Drexel rounded out the top five at 584.

Blue Hen junior Justin Martinson (at right), who shot an even par 71 during Saturday’s round, recorded a five over par 76 on Sunday on the par 71, 6528-yard USNA course. He finished tied for 24th place with a five over par score of 71-76-147.

Sophomore Greg Matthias improved by three strokes on Saturday’s round by firing a four over par 75 on Sunday and finished tied for 59th at 78-75-153, 11 over par. Fellow sophomore Stephen Scialo, who followed his opening round of 76 with a six over par 77 on Sunday, also tied for 59th place with an 11 over par final score of 76-77-153.

Sophomore Bobby Arthur improved by two strokes on Sunday, as he shot a six over par 77 and finished tied for 71st place with a two-day score of 79-77-156, 14 over par. Junior Kevin McLister also finished tied for 71st place after shooting an eight over par 79 on Sunday to finish 77-79-156.

Sam Chien of Northwestern shot a seven under par 64 during Sunday’s round and took medalist honors with a two-day score of 71-64-135, seven under par, while his teammate David Lipsky was second at 69-68-137.

The Blue Hens return to action on September 26-27 when Delaware competes in the Cornell Invitational.
