NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware golfer Kevin McLister (at right) qualified for the United States Amateur Championship while Mike Barrow won the Newark Country Club Championship as the Blue Hen golf team members continued an impressive summer.

McLister, who will be a junior with Delaware during the 2009-10 season, shot a six-under par 69-69-138 on the par 71 course at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Va. last weekend. He finished tied for second place out of 138 players, and was one of five players at the tournament to earn a qualifying spot.

McLister will be one of 312 players competing in the 2009 United States Amateur from August 24-30 at the Southern Hills Country Club and Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Following the first two rounds the field will be cut to 64 golfers, and the tournament will be match play the rest of the way.

McLister becomes the third Blue Hen golfer to qualify for the United States Amateur in the last five years, joining his brother Joe McLister in 2005 and Jeff Griest in 2008.

McLister finished fourth on Delaware last season with an average round of 76.90, and he finished a team-best eighth place at Liberty University’s Frank Landrey Invitational last fall.

Barrow, a rising senior who will captain the Blue Hens during the 2009-10 season, won the Newark Country Club title last weekend with a three-round score of 74-75-74-223, 10 shots over par. He finished three shots ahead of his father, Bill Barrow, while his brother Brian placed third.

Barrow, who earned the team’s Sportsmanship Award this past spring, competed in the Scotty Duncan Invitational and Towson Invitational for Delaware during the 2008-09 season.
