UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- University of Delaware rising senior Justin Martinson competed in the 110th United States Amateur Championship this week, but missed the cut and did not advance to match play.

Martinson (at right) shot a 13 over par 84 during the first round and a seven over par 79 during the second, finishing 276th with a 20 over par score of 163.

He began play on Monday on the par 71, 7742-yard Chambers Bay course, and finished only nine holes before darkness suspended play. Martinson opened with a triple bogey on the first hole, and also posted three more bogeys to finish the front nine at six over par 42. Martinson rallied on Tuesday, making a birdie on the 12th hole to remain six over. However he posted another triple bogey on the 13th and added four more bogeys to card 42-42-84.

Martinson opened the par 72, 7420-yard Home Course on the back nine, and recorded pars on seven of the nine holes to shoot a two over par 38. He added five more pars while shooting a five over par 41 on the front nine, carding a seven over par 41-38-79.

Despite the performance Martinson continued a remarkable run for University of Delaware golfers competing at the United States Amateur, as the Blue Hens have been represented at the tournament in four of the last six years. Fellow UD senior Kevin McLister competed in the 2009 U.S. Amateur, while Jeff Griest participated in the 2008 tournament. McLister’s brother, former Blue Hen Joey McLister, competed in the 2005 U.S. Amateur.

Looking to build off an impressive 2009-10 campaign during which Delaware captured four team tournament titles, Martinson, McLister and the rest of the Blue Hens open their 2010 fall schedule on Sept. 5-6 when they compete in the Turning Stone Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y.
