A pioneer in the field of athletic training, "Doc" served the University of Delaware for 36 years as an athletic trainer and 41 seasons as men's tennis coach. As head athletic trainer, Rylander treated thousands of Blue Hen student athletes and was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 1986.
