Marciulonis Leads Hens to Big First Round Win; Delaware Advances to Finals

TUCSON, AZ – Senior guard Kestutis Marciulionis scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and forward Mike Pegues added 18 points as the University of Delaware men's basketball team posted one of its biggest wins in school history with a 76-66 win over Alabama in the first round of the Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic at the University of Arizona’s McKale Center.

The Blue Hens, who knocked off a Southeastern Conference foe for the second time in four years, won their fifth straight game to improve to 9-1 on the season. Alabama (6-5) had a two-game win streak snapped despite a 19-point, 11-rebound effort from guard Schea Cotton and 16 points off the bench from Sam Haginas.

Delaware will play host and No. 5 ranked Arizona (10-2), a 66-51 first round winner over UNC-Wilmington, Thursday night in the championship game at 9:30 p.m. EST.

Delaware, which committed just 10 turnovers for the game, overcame a 44-39 halftime defecit and a 46-34 rebound disadvantage to post the victory. The Crimson Tide committed 20 turnovers for the game and shot just 35.6 percent from the field (21 of 59). Alabama did not make a field goal in the final 7:46 of action.

“We were more focused for this game than we have been all season,” said Delaware head coach Mike Brey, whose 1996-97 team downed SEC foe Florida 88-78 in Puerto Rico for the Hens’ and the America East Conference’s only wins over teams from that conference. “We’ve had this game circled on the calendar for a quite a while. Everyone contributed tonight. We are the more experienced team. We did a great job defensively and got on the boards. We played like veterans tonight.”

Alabama led 44-39 at the break and went up 46-39 early in the second half on two free throws by Erwin Dudley (12 points). But the Hens came right back with a 9-0 run, including five points by Marciulionis, and took a 48-46 lead with 17:58 left to play. The lead changed hands several times before the Hens got some breathing room on a clutch three-pointer by junior Greg Miller (11 points) with 3:49 left that put Delaware up 69-64.

The Crimson Tide never got closer than four points the rest of the way as Delaware scored seven of the last eight points of the game to win going away. Alabama did not connect on a field goal after Cotton hit a layup withi 7:46 left to play. Overall, the Crimson Tide hit just 6 of 26 (.231) second half shots.

Billy Wells came off the bench to add eight points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Hens, who are 9-1 for the first time since the 1971-72 season. Marciulionis, playing in his 100th career game at Delaware, hit on 6 of 11 shots from the field, including two three-pointers, and was 10 of 15 from the foul line.
