Delaware 58, American
57
November 27, 1999
NEWARK, DE - Mike Pegues
scored 27 of season-high 32 points in the first half to
stake Delaware to 10-point halftime lead and the Blue Hens
held on down the stretch for a 58-57 non-league men's
basketball victory over American Saturday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (4-0), who won their 14th
straight regular season game, let a 12-point second half
lead get away before escaping with the win when American
guard Hasheem Alexander missed a 15-footer from the left
side with one second left.
American, off to its best start since
1995-96, fell to 2-1 despite 24 points and seven rebounds
from forward Patrick Doctor. Forward Tim Washington added
eight points and eight rebounds.
The 6-5 Pegues, the 1999 America East
Player of the Year, scored 27 of Delaware's 40 first half
points, connecting on five three pointers, to give UD a
40-30 lead. Pegues (DeMatha/ Forestville, MD), who is
averaging 27.5 rebounds per game, also added 10 rebounds and
a team-high three assists. Pegues, who had connected on just
five three pointers in his career entering the game, set a
UD record with his ninth career 30-point game.
Delaware, playing with nine players,
including a newly activated team manager, due to injuries,
jumped out to a 17-4 first half lead on the way to the 40-30
halftime cushion. But the Eagles slowly chipped away and
took a 52-50 lead with 9:12 left as Doctor scored six points
in an 8-0 run.
The game featured four more ties, the
last at 57-57 when American's Saliou-Bineyt Telly hit one of
two free throws with 1:35 left.
Delaware's Madou Diouf provided
the winning margin when he converted one of two free throws
with 18 seconds left.
American had one last chance to win the
game, inbounding the ball under its own basket with 3.2
seconds left. But Alexander's jumper just inside the
three-point line missed.
Delaware 7-1 center Ndongo Ndiaye
scored four points, pulled nine rebounds, and blocked five
shots in his first career start.
