#5 Arizona 89, Delaware 77
Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic Championship
December 30, 1999

TUCSON, AZ – Led by tournament Most Valuable Player Loren Woods’ 23 rebounds and 11 assists, No. 5 ranked University of Arizona was too much for the University of Delaware men’s basketball team to handle as the Blue Hens dropped an 89-77 verdict in the championship game of the Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic Thursday night before a sellout crowd of 14,512 at the McKale Center.

The Hens (9-3), who have never defeated a Top 25 opponent but had downed Alabama 76-66 in the semifinals, had a five-game winning streak halted despite 21 points from all-tournament pick Kestutis Marciulionis and 16 points and nine rebounds from Darryl Presley. Marciulionis led the Alabama win with 25 points.

The Hens, who were searching for their first in-season tournament title since 1992-93 at Mt. St. Mary’s, are off to their best start since opening 11-1 in 1971-72.

“They are a very good team,” said Delaware head coach Mike Brey of Arizona. “I was very impressed, especially with how physical they were. Loren Woods played great. Maybe this was his coming out party. We are disappointed we couldn’t make it more competitive. We’ve won 22 of our last 25, so we haven’t felt like this in a while. But we are a better team for coming here. This was a great experience.”

“I’m very disappointed,” said Presley. “I don’t like losing. But like Coach Brey said, we can build on this. We’re a much better team now.”

“We learned a lot as a team this week,” said Marciulionis. “It was great for us to play in this kind of situation. It was an NCAA-type environment.”

Arizona (11-2), which has now won all 15 Fiesta Bowl Tournaments, used a 52-34 rebound advantage and a 24-10 advantage at the foul line to post the victory.

The Wildcats, who led 47-31 at the break, led by as much as 24 points at 80-56 with 6:09 left to play before the Hens made a late run. Madou Diouf and Mike Pegues each added 11 points for the Hens but Pegues, Delaware’s leading scorer and the 1999 America East Player of the Year, fouled out with 8:37 left to play after being double-teamed all night.

Woods, a 7-1 center and transfer for Wake Forest, connected on 7 of 14 shots from the field and 9 of 12 from the foul line to lead the Wildcats. Michael Wright added 19 points and 14 rebounds and Richard Jefferson chipped in with 18 points as Arizona put five scorers in double digits.

Delaware jumped out to a 10-8 lead but followed that with a six-minute drought that saw the Hens shoot 0 for 9 from the field and fail to score on 12 straight possession. Arizona took advantage and scored 13 points to go up 21-10. The Wildcats scored 16 of the final 21 points of the first half to take the 16-point halftime cushion.

In addition to Marciulionis and Woods, also named to the all-tournament team were Alabama’s Schea Cotton and Erwin Dudley and Arizona’s Jefferson and Wright.
