NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Billy Wells exploded for 27 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field to lead the University of Delaware to a 77-74 men's basketball exhibition victory over Athletes in Action Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Wells, a transfer from Tulane, hit on 10 of 13 shots from the field and seven of eight from the three-point line as the Blue Hens held on to the victory. Delaware shot 50 percent from the field (27 of 54) and connected on 12 of 26 three-point attempts.

Mike Pegues added 22 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for the Blue Hens while AIA, which defeated Georgia Tech by 16 points last week, placed five scorers in double figures led by Ryan Borowicz (17 points), Joe Modderman (16 points), and guard Scott Stewart (14 points), who also had team highs of seven rebounds and six assists.

Delaware senior guard John Gordon, a first team All-America East selection a year ago, left the game four minutes into the game with an injured left foot. He was scheduled to have x-rays done Tuesday morning at which time his status will be determined.

Delaware jumped out to a 31-20 halftime lead as Athletes in Action shot just 9 of 26 (.346). AIA, which shot 65 percent from the field in the second half (19 of 29), slowly came back and took their first lead at 66-65 with 3:40 left.

Delaware went back up by six but AIA came back again, tying the score at 74-74 with 31 seconds left.

But Delaware put the game away as Pegues hit two free throws with nine seconds left and Borowicz' three-point attempt with one second left missed its mark.
